Each March thousands flock to Austin, Texas for the South by Southwest Interactive, Music, Film and Gaming Conference. Everything is bigger in Texas right?! This hybrid event brings together professionals, creators, artists, techies and much more for a 10-day full-throttle adventure. This year I went with a mission to learn about the latest trends in social good, virtual + augmented reality, digital video, and social media. And it didn’t disappoint, here are my top social good trends from SXSW 2017.
Virtual Reality is the future – think beyond headsets, clunky gear and imagine a room of projections on walls or a 360-degree sphere. There’s a growing trend for museums, libraries, and other exhibit or educational based nonprofits to share their story in a new way. Virtual reality. I was inspired by Luxloop and their work with the Minneapolis Institute of Art to create a one of a kind event using projected images and a story of what’s next for MIA. Imagine eating dinner while being surround by a piece of art or landscape…..breathtaking, isn’t it?
Collaborations are everywhere – one of my favorite things about SXSW are the people. Everyone is there to learn and to connect with like-minded individuals. SXSW offers the Social Good Hub, SXSW Community Awards, and Comcast Lounge hosted the #WhatsGoodAwards. It was such an incredible opportunity to forge new collaborations with nonprofits, nonprofit service providers, and tools. The nonprofit industry thrives with collaborations and strategic partnerships. I challenge you this week to reach out to an organization you’ve been wanting to work with on an event, or a sponsor you’ve been putting off contacting.
Storytelling is the key to marketing – I’m biased because I spend a majority of my time helping nonprofits tell their storing in a captivating and converting way. However, a great story is at the core of every marketing tactic from a journalist, to TV to radio and social media. The story of your nonprofit is what brings in awareness, donations, supporters, volunteers, and so much more. A compelling story is one that others can share for you, your story should be easily digestible and shareable with others. Watch our YouTube video for our best storytelling tips.
Ride the social advocacy wave – its no secret that nonprofits are dealing with a lot of uncertainty with the current administration but there’s been a huge increase in donations. ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and countless local nonprofits have seen the benefits of a “rage donation.” Use the voices of your community and organize a drive, a protest, a march, a sit-in, a knitting party, whatever, get creative. Use your nonprofit platform to be a space for your community to come together support, advocate, and resist.
